WHY DO A PATENT SEARCH?
A patent search is the first step in obtaining a patent. The patent search sets the boundaries of what your patentable invention is. The patent search sets the boundaries by finding related patents and identifies what, if anything, in the new invention is patentable.

This is analogous to checking a piece of property to see where the neighboring fences around the property are and therefore, how much is left to you.

CAN I DO MY OWN PATENT SEARCH?
We are usually concerned when people want to do a search on their own. It takes years of practice to do a thorough search. The search is important so you can tell how much property is available to you.

Imagine if, as in the property analogy above, you later discovered two more fences running though the yard cutting it down to a tiny portion, making the property almost useless. Whereas this can happen with any search, it happens more frequently, almost commonly, when a non-skilled individual does a search.

Therefore, it is best to start any patenting process with a professional patent search. Click here for the patent search submission page..
